Description
The purpose of this project was to identify capacity within the Town of Yarmouth to respond proactively to coastal impacts of climate change induced sea-level rise and more frequent extreme weather events. The Town of Yarmouth can use this information in developing its Municipal Climate Change Action Plan, an amendment to the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, as required by the Municipal Gas Tax Funding Agreement for 2014. This project was conducted over the summer of 2011 and included a review of plans and policies and consultation with municipal staff and professionals in other government agencies of relevance to climate change adaptation issues. The report includes a summary of the legislative environment in which Nova Scotia’s municipalities operate, a description of the Town of Yarmouth’s governance and administrative structure as these relate to capacity for climate change adaptation, identification of key government and other stakeholder groups with an interest in climate change impacts, and a review of the Town’s existing land use plans and policies for capacity to respond to coastal climate change impacts.
